Musica Snaps

The best two things we got out of globalization & overpopulation would definitely be talent & diversity. So there are hundreds of thousands of musicians all over the world, but how many of them are Egyptian? How many of them write about things we can see in our daily life. If I were asked to point out a genre that I like less than all others, it would definitely be ‘the love song genre’ despite whatever music is being played in the background. We can all easily relate to a love song, but so can almost anyone of the other six billion inhabitants of the globe.

Ever heard someone’s voice and the first thing that crossed your mind was “out of this world”?, well if you didn’t, read this review and you’ll know that such voice truly exists … Nadia Ali, Much more than music full of feelings.

Nadia Ali, maybe a name that you heard about many times before, but I am not sure if many of you listened to her songs or watched any of her performances, whether in her solo career or with her former band IIO.

Before we start talking about her music, let’s take a sneak peak into her life.

Who is Nadia Ali?
Nadia was born in Libya to Pakistani parents and raised in New York city, actually this added a lot to her personality as she gained the American lifestyle kind of inspiration – personified in the house culture - with the eastern culture taste that you can still feel in her very unique voice, which in return helped her a lot to attract millions of people to admire it.

She enjoyed singing since she was as young as 8 years old, but her parents always wanted her to focus on her studies.

Nadia Ali’s Master Records

She started her professional music career as the songwriter and the vocalist of the band IIO, releasing the all time hit “rapture” as their debut in summer 2001, which made it to the 2nd place on the top chart of the UK.
After the success of “rapture”, IIO released many singles one after the other like “at the end”, “smooth” and “is it love” which afterwards led to the release of their first and actually their last album “poetica” late 2005.
Poetica included all single tracks released by IIO in addition to the new album tracks, here is the track listing of the album:

  1. Rapture
  2. At The End
  3. Smooth
  4. Runaway
  5. Kiss You
  6. Chastity
  7. Tantric
  8. Rebel
  9. Is It Love
  10. Be It
  11. Give It Up
  12. Hangin On
  13. The One
  14. What A Way
  15. Poetica

Uptown “Poetica” rating: 10/10

Just a word about every hit:

  • At The End: the kind of beat that makes you “moooove”
  • Smooth: Wanna relax? , this one is essential
  • Runaway: puts you in the mood of needing to runaway
  • Kiss you: dance to the beat, it stayed a must for every club or DJ party for a long period of time, and actually it deserved being there.
  • Chastity: the kind of song with perfect mixing and more than perfect lyrics, nadia somehow preach with this kind of lyrics, but preaching that you can’t get bored of … though its her longest track.
  • Tantric: you’ll feel that its “kiss you - part 2” different music but same kind of mood
  • Is it love: a master piece, romanticized house love song that is undescribable
  • Be it: back to great lyrics
  • Give it up, hanging on, the one, what a way: good tracks, but with nothing unique to discuss.

After the release of “poetica”, Nadia left the group starting her solo career. So far she released 2 singles. The first, Who is Watching, was a collaboration with DJ/Producer Armin Van Buuren and appeared on his album "Shivers." The second, Something To Lose which is a duet with singer/songwriter Rosko, was produced by Creamer & K.

She is currently writing and recording her full length debut album with DJ/Producer Lance Jordan, DJ Sultan, and others.

As a conclusion, if you’re missing Nadia Ali, you’re missing a whole different world of music. Give it a try, you’ll never regret taking such step, and come back with your opinions.
